Product-analysis: YSL Rouge Volupte SPF 15 in Lingerie Pink

Perhaps I need an intervention; my obsession for beautiful containers has taken me to a new low. I bought a $34 lipstick that I know I can’t use. Does it make it less insane if I used a giftcard on it? I sure hope so. Otherwise, someone start Makeupholics Anonymous and sign me up.

I’ve known my lips to be allergic to chemical sunscreens since I was 11. Apparently, that fact was not enough to discourage me from lemming Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte SPF 15. Raves for YSL Rouge Volupte have caught wild fire within the online beauty community. Everyone has been singing praises for its buttery texture, completely opaque coverage and unique formula. But never mind that, I was a fool looking up Youtube reviews on Rouge Volupte simply to catch glimpses of its beautiful lipstick case. A picture is worth a thousand words so I’ll show you just that. Hopefully that’ll suffice in communicating how stunningly gorgeous this lipstick is.

The case exudes such glamour, it’s sickening. I’m particularly smitten with the case for Lingerie Pink, which is the shade I purchased. The creamy bubblegum pink on the outer case matches the lipstick color and it is such a stark contrast against the nearly gaudy gold case. I LOVE it! The Cherry on top is the dainty little mirror on top of the case cap. Going through the motions of whipping this baby out of my purse just oozes pure sass.

And of course I tried the lipstick- you think I’m going to acquire a $34 lipstick and not touch the lipstick? That’s crazy talk! Upon first swipe, my jaw dropped at its consistency: ultra-creamy, ultra-plush and ultra-opaque. It was like the lipstick had well-oiled wheels underneath; it glided on effortlessly. The pale cream pink looks great when swatched but it showed a lot of white on my lips, despite my having pale, cool-toned Asian skin. The coverage was more opaque than many concealers I’ve seen, it was insane.

Lingerie Pink is perhaps the most reviewed color on the internet. To be honest, the shade looked mostly unflattering because it was overused and abused. Even so, I can see why it’s popular. The shade has zero shimmer and looks absolutely beautiful when it’s sheered out and worn strategically. I dotted on a tiny bit of lip stain unto the center of my lips and applied this very lightly to my outer lips (where you would wear lipliners) and blended the lines. I’ve never liked wearing lipsticks because I just don’t understand the concept of it. It always looks so made-up and unflattering. But this shade somehow defines and brightens lips without looking artificial. It’s a very strange effect coming from this synthetic shade of pink, but I like it.
So now I’m starting to like this $34 lipstick that I’m allergic to- great. It’s launched this lipstick kick I’m in, I just want to find the same shimmer-free shade but in a less artificial formula. It’d be nice if the formula is long-lasting too. Any recommendations for me?

Girl, I hear you. I'm also allergic to chemical sunscreens but I have really dry lips and I hear such raves about these lipsticks! Lisa at Shop'n'Chomp is sensitive to chem ss too and she says she's fine wearing these as long as she puts a layer of aquaphor on first. I dunno that I would spend $34 on a lipstick if I had to be so careful (and dude. i have had my share of lip breakouts and reactions thank you very much) but it might be worth a try for you!

That being said, you might want to look into the Laura Mercier Stickglosses. They are my absolute favorite lipsticks and the formula is just absolutely to die for. They're the only ones that don't emphasize my liplines and the only ones I don't *have* to wear balm under. In fact, I'd posit they're actually slightly conditioning! I have my 7th coming to me, so you know I really love them!

Hi Catherine!

Thank you so much for the heads up on the Rouge Volupte and the recs on LM Stickgloss! I've actually hear great things about them :D Wow, 7th stick? That is definitely love.

I get the same feeling about the Rouge Volupte as Lisa; I almost feel like I might be able to get away with it. I tried to research if they're are different grades of chemical SPF (hoping some may be more gentle) but my search turned up with nothing.

Bottom line though, I just don't want to subject my sensitive lips to chemical SPF even if they can "take it". I'll look into the LM you mentioned, sounds soo nice!

this is my all-time favorite lipstick!! ysl rouge volupte! honestly, i'm a fan of almost all the colors. The first time I put it on my lips, it was instant love. I really like a 'matte' look and that's what I loved about these...the pure opaque pigment. (I'm definitely a lipstick person though)

Yesterday I just bought Sally Hansen Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy lipstick and lipgloss. For around $7 I was EXTREMELY impressed with the lipstick!! It's actually my new favorite! I would love it if you reviewed that line, especially the lipsticks. They go on like butter and are supposedly paraben free, etc. Pigment is pretty darn good as well.

Thank you for this blog!

Hi there!

I have to agree: YSL Rouge Volupte has an amazing formula! I really love that it's matte. Well, if you're a lipstick person and you like the Carmindy lipstick, I'm going to have to look into that :D When this line first came out, I heard great things about it. Let me know if there's a color you recommend!

Hello again :) I can see why you bought the lipstick in the cute packaging (hee hee) I'm not allergic to anything (i think) but i do LOVE anything that is natural or organic. I don't care what it is, I'll buy it! I would maybe recommend the 100% pure lip glaze. I have it in Strawberry. I am not much of a lipstick person either. I hate lip gloss, and would prefer more of a natural look and feel that lip stains offer. BUT, the 100% pure lip glaze is really good. It's creamy, smooth, and very pigmented so you don't need very much. Hope this may help you, and thanks ever so much again for all of your awesome tips and reviews. KEEP THEM COMING!!!

Hi Lillian!

I'm a huge fan of 100% Pure fan as well :D I'm addicted to their bronzer and have been using it everyday.

I haven't had the pleasure of trying the Lip Glazes though. Do you know if they have a color that is a pale bubblegum pink or a pink that has no shimmer? Now that I'm searching for colors like these, i realize how sorely rare they are in color lines.

I've been on a lipstick kick lately as well, I think I just like the old world glamour of pulling out a gorgeous tube. I just treated myself to a chanel rouge coco.

Brilliant Farmgirl's Beauty Secrets said...

HI Gem Z,

Oh you have no idea how tempted I am by the Chanel Rouge Coco! What's with all this lemming of synthetics-ridden cosmetics? ;p I've been staying away from the Chanel counter but heard that the entire case is made of metal, is it so?

it is made of metal and makes the most delightful click when closed. I needed a new evening special occasion red, so I dont feel too worried as it wont be daily wear.

HI GemZ,

Sounds like such a treat! I would love to be able to wear Red ;D What color did you get?

Thank you for your immensely helpful reviews and recommendations! I really like Burt's bees lip shimmer in Fig. It is mate and looks natural on my lips. I'm medium/olive though. I hope one of these suggestions will help. Our way to try to give a little back :)

Hi Lady Rosenred,

Thank you for the rec! I've always loved Burt's Bees lip products, I'll check that color out the next time I'm at Target.

Oh I want. I need. I must have this! LOL I don't care about the formula. I have an irrational desire for this lipstick.

Brilliant Farmgirl's Beauty Secrets said...

Hi Elvira,

That is my exact sentiment with this lipstick- All rational thoughts out the window!
