Farmgirl Beauty Secret #12: plain yogurt as a daily face pack.

After researching into yogurts and having excellent results with taking acidophilus internally, I realized the idea of applying it topically. Acidophilus, which is in yogurts, aids digestion by helping with break-down of food and I thought it might have similar reaction on dead skin cells, aiding in healthy cell-turnover. With that said, I wouldn’t recommend applying straight acidophilus from a supplement, yogurt contains much more nutrients than just acidophilus and undiluted Acidophilus may be too intense for skin.

What to buy: Trader Joe’s is great (think Whole Foods Jr.), they have plain yogurts that are non-fat to full fat. The non-fat no-hormone plain yogurt became my yogurt of choice. It was summer and I couldn’t fathom the thought of smearing on full-fat yogurt on my face. Do not buy flavored yogurt, it will contain unnecessary sugars that are not beneficial to acne-prone skin. I also think buying a plain yogurt that is hormone-free is beneficial.

Plain Yogurt Pack

Initial experience: Applied on a cleansed face. Has an instant calming effect. Scent is faint but yummy- like freshly made vanilla ice cream! I left it on for over 20 minutes because it was so comforting. When I rinsed it off, face was not oily or irritated at all, rather all the Rosacea redness was gone and inflammation from breakouts were 95% reduced- I had never seen my face this calm and healthy-looking before! I continued to use this daily for 10-15 minutes, up to 30 minutes.

Within a week: Skin is consistently calmer and less stressed/red, it is also exfoliating very gently. Pimples were still there but the yogurt pack was having a detoxifying effect. My skin was purging but it did not exacerbate the acne.

Within 2 months: The yogurt was starting to draw out the impurities embedded in the pores. Skin continued to exfoliate, however it was also getting stronger/thicker. Acne scars began to fade.

Within 3 months: The yogurt continued to remove daily grime that gets embedded in pores. Pimples are lessening and blackheads reduced in number. Whiteheads are starting to reduce in number as well. Skin is stronger, more resilient. Acne scars reduced by 50%.

Within 6 months: All of the above continues. Acne scars reduced by 85%. White heads reduced by about 90%. Pimples reduced by 70%. Blackheads reduced by 50%

Good luck! Consistency is definitely the key here for the yogurt mask :) I love napping, reading, watching my favorite show with it on; distractions make the time fly by!

I was doing this for a few days and got put off the smell, but tried it again once I read your article and you're right, it's PERFECT for all those skin imperfections I had to cover with concealer. Thank you so much!

I found this post looking for healing effects of yogurt. I just used it today for 15 minutes and loved the results. I used it after a sugar scrub. This post makes me want to continue with it and I will. Love your blog and have bookmarked it!

Hi there!

I stumbled onto your blog and am I ever so glad that I did(:

I have yet to give it a try yet but I will pick some yoghurt up tomorrow and hopefully it'll work.

I do have a question though: because I am also applying lemon straight to my face after cleansing it, would it be more appropriate to cleanse my face with the yogurt before I put the lemon on or after? I am hoping to ditch my current cleanser and bring aboard the yoghurt as my daily facial cleanser(:

I hope to hear from you soon! (:

Thanks for this article! its very helpful. I'm sick of finding the next product in the market that can help moisturize me and my husband's skin so I decided to go all natural. We have a number of skin problems namely eczema, fungus, and rosacea. I have a lot of question though. What is the facial mask process? for example I cleanse, then put on an avocado mask, rinse, do I moisturize after this? And what do you mean by exfoliate? does it differs from mask? Also the yogurt facial mask sounds very promising as my husband suffers from facial roscea (red for no reason and easily sun burnt!). Please give me you facial routine and step! thanks!

Hi Mrs. Primo!

Yes, cleanse then mask and you can moisturize thereafter (if you already have a moisturizer you can use). I see that you are using avocado mask, which is great! Feel free to alternate between the yogurt and the avocado mask, or, even better, blend the 2 and make a mask that way! That sounds like the perfect winter mask to soothe and nourish dry, irritated skin.

The yogurt mask was my routine when I was severely acne prone. Right now I'm all about anti-aging so all I do is cleanse and apply vitamin c serum, that's it!

Wow! Your story is amazing! I've always had perfect skin, but now in my mid-30's I have enlarged pores and dry skin. I've started using oatmeal & yogurt as a nightly facial mask. I wasn't sure if it would be all right to keep using it every day, so I did a search and found your blog - it's great! And I am very inspired by your results!

Brilliant Farmgirl's Beauty Secrets™ said...

Thank you Faith, that means so much to me! Oatmeal and yogurt is an amazing combo :D

Hi! Once I read this, I ran to Whole Foods and bought a tub of plain yogurt. Hehe. I was just wondering if you still use this everyday. (:

Hi there, love your name!

Yogurt mask was something I used to eliminate my acne. My regimen is more about anti-aging now but if I breakout, I'll still revert back to this :)

Lovely blog!! Thanks for the tip.
I thought I'd share some of my add on tips too..
#1 with the yogurt ( i used the non fat greek yog) one can add a bit of turmeric power (natural). Plus lemon juice can work wonders.
#2 for those with problem skin( acne prone), take some coriander/cilantro leaves...grind it...get a thick paste of the juice. apply the paste on face for 15 mins or take a cotton ball and dab the juice on acne zone. will clear out!!!
(I didn't mean to take your share of credit here Farmgal...Hope this is fine..)
Many thanks:)

Wow i tried this Yogurt mask last night and my skin felt amazing! I am gonna try this everyday hopefully it helps heal my skin. Can using yogurt everyday make your skin immune to it?

Dear Farmgirl,

I've recently tried applying plain yogurt as a mask and I noticed that my skin has become a lil more bumpy as usual (more whiteheads). Is that the effect of purging? How long did your purging period last? I really don't wish to stop applying before it takes effect. By the way, love your blog!

XOXO

Brilliant Farmgirl's Beauty Secrets™ said...

Hi Lin!
I'm sorry to hear about the bumpiness. As with anything topical, ymmv. I would stop usage for a while to see if the bumps subsides and reintroduce the yogurt mask later and slowly.

I let it dry and rince it off in the shower in the morning. Does it help with skin starting to get loose around the jowels and neck? I'm 48 and starting to look like mom. :( thanks. ginny
