Myth-busting: Using toilet-seat paper covers as oil-blotting sheets?

Unless you are the heir to a paper toilet-seat cover company and your parents supply you with fresh paper seat covers by the packs, I am against using these seat covers as blotting sheets. Sure, it happened to all of us; we all thought it was the best thing since sliced bread when we first heard of this nifty trick. What could be better than gigantic blotting sheets that remove unsightly complexion shine, supplied FREE of charge by the facility management of fine public restrooms you do your business in?

Well, there’s just one problem: paper seat cover dispenser has been tested and proven to be one of the dirtiest surfaces in public restrooms. How? Besides having contact with hands of nearly every person that comes into the stall, it is constantly sprayed by the toilet water. When a toilet is flushed, it sends millions of toilet water molecules skyrocketing above. Many of these molecules find their landing place on that dispenser (and that small section of paper cover that is exposed and vulnerable). If you insist on using them in lieu of conventional blotting papers, I recommend buying a
fresh pack, they are readily available online.

Boscia Green Tea Blotting LinensIf you would like a daintier, fit-in-your-purse version of blotting sheets, my favorite is the Boscia Green Tea Blotting Linens. $10 for 100 sheets actually beats out many drugstore varieties because they often cost more than $5 for less than 1/3 of the quantity and quality.

I totally agree with you. (but I am a bit of the germ-phobe freak anyway) If I were ever to use them, I would order them directly from a cleaning supply company!

When you put it like that, it's quite nasty. I'll stick with my clean & clear blotting papers.

Eeeek! The first thing I thought of was the turbo-flush action in airport bathrooms. Gross. I will stick with my free sample pack of Clean & Clear sheets...after that, brown paper towels work well too. Wonder if paper towel dispensers are as gross as the toilet seat cover ones?

Hi ladies,

I'm a germaphobe as well, especially when it comes to my face.

If I recall correctly, the paper towel dispensers aren't that sanitary either :( I always avoid touching any surface in public restrooms. You can imagine how long I take going to the ladies' room!

hahah this is just too funny! i noticed regular paper works too!(back in highschool when i'd be too exhausted to keep my head up and smack it on my desk full of papers, my forehead would leave a nice grease spot that was utterly embarassing and irremovable)

I agree!
Thanks for posting this! A lot of people talk about how it's such a money-saving trick, but they don't think of the other side!

Great post! I'm glad I read it before I got a chance to try them.

Having tried this, I was going to say that the paper actually isn't as good as blotting sheets. However, the yuck factor would be another good reason not to.

I love oil blotters and gosh I never thought about the toilet seat covers but I guess they would work...but, I see what you mean about the nasty germs. I use oil blotters and they truly are my best friend!

MYCLOSETGARDEN said...

Wow, very interesting. I think I will stick to the oil blotters though, lol.

I used to use oil blotters...but they never seemed to help :(

I had never heard of the trick, and cringed when I read it, because I thought of the same thing you mentioned-- flying toilet water and germy hands. Ugh!!

BUT oil blotting sheets are seriously a savior. I wish they weren't so expensive... but a must have for long car trips or flights!

OMG, see, I tried to say this when I wrote a post on my blog about using these but all I could come up with was that it skeeved me out because I'm neurotic in general. But the toilet-flushing issue never even occurred to me! That seals the deal. I will only use these if I purchase the entire package myself from a restaurant supply store or something like that. Great post! :)
